Ce n'est pas forcément pour son invention la plus connue qu'il a été médaillé, mais pour l'ensemble de ses travaux.

Leo Baekeland: Synthetic Revolution

Belgian-born chemist-entrepreneur, Baekeland had a knack for spotting profitable opportunities. He scored his first success in the 1890s with his invention of Velox, an improved photographic paper that freed photographers from having to use sunlight for developing images. With Velox, they could rely on artificial light, which at the time usually meant gaslight but soon came to mean electric. The invention was purchased for a then unheard of price of one million dollars. Using the profits from the sale Baekeland went on to test new synthetic materials. In 1909 Baekeland unveiled the world's first fully synthetic plastic at a meeting of the New York chapter of the American Chemical Society. Would-be customers discovered it could be fashioned into molded insulation, valve parts, pipe stems, billiard balls, knobs, buttons, knife handles and all manner of items.

Leo Hendrik Baekeland, né en 1863 à Gand et mort en 1944, est un chimiste américain d'origine belge, connu pour ses recherches en photographie et sur les matières plastiques.

Biographie [modifier]

Fils d'un modeste cordonnier de Gand en Belgique, Leo Baekeland y naquit en 1863. Doué en chimie, physique mathématique et économie, il obtient un doctorat en Sciences à l'université de sa ville en 1884. Après avoir enseigné quelques années, un voyage de noces l'amène aux États-Unis en 1889 où il se fixe. Dès 1891, il est en mesure de commercialiser un papier photographique révolutionnaire. Pouvant se développer en lumière artificielle, ce papier rencontre un succès immédiat. En 1899, Eastman Kodak rachète le procédé pour le montant fabuleux à l'époque d'un million de dollars. Cette opération financera d'autres recherches qui déboucheront en 1907 sur la mise au point de la bakélite qui fera entrer le monde dans l'ère des matières plastiques. Cette invention lui valut la Médaille Franklin en 1940. Il meurt à Beacon dans l'État de New York en 1944. Le magazine Time le classa parmi les vingt plus grands esprits du xxe siècle.

Il a effectivement "inventé" quelque chose, dans le domaine scientifique......mais pas la médecine.

Thomas Shaw

Thomas Shaw is an engineer and inventor who, according to the below reportage in Washington Monthly – titled “Dirty Medicine How medical supply behemoths stick it to the little guy, making America’s health care system more dangerous and expensive” - has been battling to get his innovative medical products into the hands of hospital staff who want them and badly need them. Unfortunately, Mr. Shaw has run into America’s GPO juggernaut.

GPO stands for “Group Purchasing Organization”. The typical GPO’s role, grossly simplified, is to negotiate bulk order rates for medical and related supplies on behalf of multiple hospitals. The largest GPO’s handle orders for hundreds of hospitals and clinics. Since their inception in the 1960′s, because they are self-regulating, highly profitable, and almost immune from laws that guard against kickbacks, GPO’s have been accused of everything from endemic corruption to stifling the innovation of small beans inventors like Thomas Shaw, to actually increasing hospital costs – in short, the opposite of what GPO’s are supposed to be doing.

The part of the story that relates to China and Asia is towards the bottom. One day, Thomas Shaw finally gave up on trying to break into the American hospital market;
